Volunteer Mentors Needed

March 12, 2026 Young Military

Make a difference in a young person's life. YoungMilitary.org is seeking BCI/FBI-screened volunteer mentors to help guide our first cohort of cadets in Garfield Heights.

We are looking for good adults who want to make a real difference in the life of a young person.

YoungMilitary.org is actively recruiting volunteer mentors for our founding Garfield Heights chapter. Mentors are the backbone of our program -- the adults who show up week after week, model the values we teach, and give our cadets a steady, trusted presence they may not have anywhere else.

Who we are looking for: - U.S. military veterans (any branch, any era) - First responders (police, fire, EMS, corrections) - Educators, coaches, and youth workers - Clergy and community leaders - Responsible adults from every walk of life who want to invest in the next generation

Military experience is welcomed but not required. What is required is character, reliability, and a willingness to show up and be a good example.

What you will do: - Attend weekly chapter meetings (Saturdays, roughly two to three hours) - Assist with drill and ceremony, physical training, community-service projects, and character-education workshops - Serve as a consistent adult role model for our cadets - Participate in periodic off-site events (drill competitions, service days, family events)

What we require: - A completed volunteer application - A satisfactory BCI (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation) background check and FBI background check - Agreement to our Safeguarding and Code of Conduct policies - Two-deep leadership at all cadet interactions (a volunteer is never alone with a cadet) - Basic training in our program -- YoungMilitary.org provides orientation, safeguarding training, and ongoing support; no prior mentoring experience is required

What we provide: - Full onboarding and orientation - Safeguarding and mandatory-reporter training (meets or exceeds Ohio standards for youth-serving organizations) - Mentor uniforms and program materials - A real community of other adults who are in this work together

This work is unpaid, but it is not unpaid because it does not matter. It is unpaid because our cadets and their families do not pay a dime to participate -- and we want the adults who serve them to be doing it for the right reason. If you have two to three hours a week and a desire to help the next generation, we would love to hear from you.
